I can say that even with the Sharks battling the Flames in a very exciting series, that they are still getting second fiddle in the local SF Chronicle. I think they may be getting more exposure with the SJ Mercury, but they are still considered our team in SF and its only a 35-40 minute drive down to SJ for us. In today’s paper, they had a side column that was overshadowed by a HUGE picture of the Oakland A’s, who were just playing a regular season game as opposed to the Sharks playing a playoff game. Not to mention, Oakland is also about a 20-25 minute drive so its not like they are choosing sports based on distance. How has the hockey coverage been in your area, for cities with their teams in the playoffs and cities with their team not in the playoffs? How about cities that don’t even have an NHL team?

Crap. I can’t even find a bar that has hockey coverage outside of network television, let alone expect my local news to report on the NHL. No one gave a damn when the Ducks won and I know very few hockey fans. SoCal shouldn’t be allowed to have even one hockey team, and somehow we have 2 and yet Hamilton, ON still has no team. GARBAGE DAY!
Hey!
I live in Canada, so hockey is headline news all year round! My Provence (Nova Scotia) Doesn’t even have a home team, and our sports section of the local paper is always hockey hockey hockey! I love it!
I often hear American hockey fans complaining about the coverage! It is sad! You should send a letter to the editor of your local paper and state your compliant!
Good luck, and I hope your team gets more coverage soon!
I don’t live in an NHL city. The local paper usually covers all sports pretty equally. And not just the Michigan teams. Granted the Michigan teams take the headlines, mostly the Wings and Tigers through out the whole year. But no, Hockey does not get pushed aside by any sport, especially this time of the year.
350 miles from Detroit.
My Hometown which is about 640 miles form Detroit is the same.
Where I am now, there isn’t too much coverage because I’m not in an NHL city. I’ve seen highlights on the news stations and I’m not sure about the newspapers, I haven’t read them.
Back home when the Sabres were in the playoffs last year, it was all they would talk about. They had a pre-game thing out side the arena on game days and it would always be the number one news story and on the front page of the newspapers. Buffalo only has two sports teams, and football isn’t in season so the Sabres are the only team so it gets plenty of coverage
Hockey still gets top billing here (near Toronto) heck, they are still talking about the Maple Leafs. All games are talked about. Baseball and basketball have good coverage as well. There is also mention of golf, racing and some olympic stuff.
The local media here is a joke. Ofcourse I am in backwoods NC and these people would rather talk about collards than anything. However, Obama was in my town last week. I would have been pissed if traffic home from work would have worsend from his visit.
I live in Dallas so the coverage is fair to non-existent. Even though the Stars were already in the middle of the first series of the play-offs the local news spent more time talking about the Mavericks (who were looking like they might not even make the play offs)… and the implosion of the Texas Rangers.
I get most of my info about the Stars from the NHL channel on Satellite or a local radio station (and FOX Sports SW). I don’t really even to bother watching local sports anymore anyway. Thank god for Center Ice too.
I live in Canada so the coverage is wall to wall. Example: I live in Toronto – we’re not even in the playoffs this year, it’s monday 1:23 PM. I found 3 sports channels talking about the NHL playoffs. Not to mention Sports talk radio.
Can’t complain about the coverage, there is always a page or two in the paper following a Wings game. If not the newspaper you can always tune in to the radio.
Its in the news every day!!! Got to love living in Canada!!!!!
I live in cleveland and they dont talk about hockey on the news, and the local sports sections dedicate about a 3 by 6 inch area to hockey, and half of that is filled up with a table of the standings. Usually they do a recap of one game, and then a one or two sentence round-up of anything else hockey related
I’m a Flames fan living in Ottawa, despite the coverage has for the most part been about the Senators and the ongoing aftermath of a good season that went downhill there is nothing -ever- about the Flames unless we play them. This sure beats the heck out of where I grew up in some small city north of Windsor where all they talked about was the Maple Leafs.
Excellent here in Pittsburgh.
The mayor even held a rally before the first round.
Well you totally said it all haha. It is getting bigger at school. I’m not sure if thats because Sharks are in the playoffs or the gangs are getting bigger
